University of the Arts London – LCC

With my Student ID I have access to all colleges that belong to University of the Arts. I can use the libraries, canteens, and so on. This is a great opportunity and I want to give you a little insight into the different colleges.

"… is located in Elephant and Castle with about 5,000 students. Courses cover graphic design and advertising, photography, film and animation, journalism, publishing and public relations, sound arts and design and interactive and spatial design." (Wikipedia)

Notable alumni: Neville Brody, Harry Beck, Peter Bialobrzeski, …

View from 13th floor.
Did you know that the buses
are white on top?!

This college gives a modern and hip impression though the building is quite old. Because of a current exhibition I got a glance on the students' work which seems really good!

Florence and the Machine

Last wednesday I had a special being-spontaneous-in-London-experience. Me and my flatmate were sitting bored kitchen. So we searched on Time Out for something to do and found out about a Florence and the Machine concert. It was already sold out but we had the feeling we could be lucky to get some tickets when we are there. So we jumped in our coats and went to The O2 Arena. Promptly we found a guy that wanted to sell his two tickets, and we made a good deal with him! We then traded these seating tickets to floor ones and had a blast! I have never experienced such a massive concert before!

The beginning made Haim, a pop group from Los Angeles. The three sisters rocked the stage! After them, Florence and the Machine had a fascinating show, they were just amazing! By the way, lead singer Florence Welch was born and studied in Camberwell!

The Blueroom. We felt like VIP.
After the show: Just happy!

Some videos from the concert I found on YouTube:

Rain Room

We are a little bit crazy to go on a sunny day in London into a Rain Room. But this famous exhibition was totally worth it waiting three hours in the queue! Also on the day we went there was a special event with contemporary dancers.

The queue inside Barbican
Curiously entering the room
Watching visitors and dancers in the rain
I really did not get wet when I walked through slowly, because of sensors
The ceiling
Stunning dance performance
Light and sound created an incredible atmosphere

Oxford Rainbow

My favourite seat in the bus is upstairs in the front!
During a night ride on Oxford Street I was astonished by the massive christmas lights! Never saw this amount of decoration before!

I felt like playing Mario Kart 64, where you can drive on a Rainbow Road. So I put this music to a video I recorded. It is shown here in double speed. (Sorry for bad quality!)

Unit 5 2/3

In Unit 5, all the lectures are finished now. We are starting to research and writing our essay about one topic we were able to choose. Mine is Manufacture & Sustainability.
I was always interested in this but want to go further and think about it as a graphic designer. I am going to analyse logos for organic, recycling, etc. certifications.
I have a very nice and motivated tutor. Fashion designer Orsola de Castro makes beautiful clothes, only  out of fabric from other companies' waste! klick here and here

My life in London made me even more aware about recycling. In the beginning I was just trying to save money, which is also one of the main topics when I talk to other students. Now I am realising how nice it is to use things again instead of throwing them away ("upcycling"). They tell a personal story and look more interesting than random new stuff from shops.

Some of my room decoration which was made without spending any pence:
