Unit 6 2/11: Typography Appetizers I

Nazareno Crea (an italian typographer, studied in Switzerland) teaches us about typeface design. The first task for us was to draw an alphabet (upper and lower cases) with pencil. It was a very good practise to understand how you can make the letters coherent to each other, like one family.

The second task was to draw a calligraphy alphabet.

Nazareno advised us for both techniques to do it as simple as possible. It was hard enough to work on the details of a very simple typeface.

Unit 5 1/3 & Unit 6 1/11

Basically I have two Units. Unit 5 makes the theoretical part where we listen to loads of talks and are going to write an essay about "The Expanded Designer" (key question: "What role should design play in the 21st century?"). In contrast to theoretical courses in Darmstadt it has a good and applied connection to the studies in general and our second course, Unit 6.
Its subject for this year is typography, and we learn a lot about the basics in typeface and book design.

For me classes here are very intense and at the moment I spend more time with working than exploring the city. However I enjoy the tasks and learn a lot, especially I can fill some gaps whose contents I was not taught in Darmstadt.

Also I take part in English class which is held in this nice room!

London Gradients

During a bus ride through rainy London I caught the blurry street lights.
Music: Radiohead – Reckoner (Nosaj Thing Remix)

Cooking Group: Unknown vegetables

On Northend Road Market we found vegetables we have never seen before!  So I decided to make a three-course-strange-vegetable-cook-in.

Taro Root
Picture from here
They taste like potatoes but more intensive. The crisps we made were very good!

Recipe

Bitter Melon/Gourd/Squash
We made a Risotto with it which tasted good – without bitter melon. The flavour of this vegetable is … bitter!!!

Chayote
The flavour is difficult to describe, one can say between courgette and pear. Especially tepid a pleasure!

Addressing the Need: The Graphic Design of the Eames Office

Again an exhibition. This time I was at PM Gallery & House for informing about the famous American design couple Ray and Charles Eames. It was very interesting for me because I did not know much about them (besides one of their films, Power of Ten). This exhibition was especially about their graphic design which is also great, not only the chairs they built!

Click here to read more about the exhibition

The following picture is by Jennifer Reingruber, a fellow student of mine in Darmstadt. It was taken in New York a few weeks ago because she is also abroad for an exchange. Check out her blog if you're interested in her experiences at Ohio State University!

North End Road Market

North End Road Market is my new insider tip for cheap fruits and vegetables!

Chelsea football fans go crazy!

Openings

On the first Thursday of every month the galleries and museums of east London open their doors late and there are plenty of events. We went to Kemistry Gallery, Carl Freedman Gallery (the paintings by David Brian Smith were great!), The Rag Factory and more.

Jiggling Atoms in The Rag Factory. This is a project by some recent graduates from BA Illustration. They have made work which deals with particle physics as its subject matter.

Such a good atmosphere!

On our way, we passed Boxpark Shoreditch, a pretty cool place!
BOXPARK is constructed of stripped, and refitted shipping containers, to create unique, low cost, low risk, ‘box shops’. Filled with a unique mix of international fashion and lifestyle brands, galleries and cafés, it’s the world’s first ‘pop-up’ mall – so named because its basic building blocks are inherently movable: they can, and will, pop up anywhere in the world!

Busking

Next to busy people in the tube, there are often buskers, on pitches that were actually made for that. I really enjoy stopping and immersing in the music. For me a facility to escape the rush for a while.
