This is my last post. Thanks to all my readers!
I am in a melancholic mood and it is strange to leave tomorrow. But new challenges are waiting for me at home.

Unit 6 11/11: A Poster A Day

For the last project in Unit 6 we were asked to make 8 different posters. They all should be A2 portrait and focused on typography but with experimentation on production. During the project we got an email every morning with the new task. Below you can read the tasks and see some of the posters in bigger size.

Poster 1: For a newspaper. Create a poster from a newspaper headline.
I found this page that shows how often the same prop newspaper reccurs in films. I searched for a scan of the prop and used the original headline and picture of the girl. I screenprinted my design on newsprint.

Poster 2: For a poet. Create a poster from a line of a poem.
I chose a german poem by Goethe which is about the ginkgo tree. He writes about mirroring and duplicating which seemed to be an interesting concept for my design. After printing, I folded the poster to give the idea of a leaf.

Poster 3: For public information. Create a poster from a piece of advice that someone once gave you.
I chose an advice I give myself sometimes: Note to Self: Relax. For the production I glued sticky notes together.

Poster 4: For public information. Create a poster from a sentence explaning how to do something.
One of my favourtite books, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, is full of imagination and there are very nice ideas. I chose a sentence where it is explained how to fly. For the poster I created 3D letters in Illustrator and arranged them to look like they are flying in space.

Poster 5: For a Book. Create a poster from the first line of a book.
Again The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I made like 10000 holes with a needle, so when light falls on the back of the poster, you can read the sentence on the front. It should look like stars.

Poster 6: To change the world. Create a poster from your own political slogan.
SAVE THE FUTURE! – Stop complaining and make the world like you want it. Don't be lazy.
I painted with acrylic on fabric.

Poster 7: For someone you don't know. Create a poster from overheard conversation.

Poster 8: For a word. Create a poster from a dictionary definition.
The longest word in English is the chemical name for titin. Here is a video of someone reading it (3.5 hours).

Tate Modern

The Tate Modern belongs to my favourite places in London! It is the biggest museum for modern art in the world. It is huge and they are building even more space for exhibitions. I was there many times but I still did not see everything. On top there is a lovely café with a great view on the Thames.

Here are some scans from my sketchbook. Perhaps you can recognise something.

Unit 6 10/11: Poetry II,3

After the second crit, we got the feeling that we want to communicate more with our matchbox. Only the quote on all the sheets was not enough for us. So we researched a bit more about burning of books and found the Black List. This was a list of books that were banned by the Nazis. It was published on 16 May 1933 by Dr. Wolfgang Herrmann.

Our final piece is a matchbox (opens on top and bottom) with the Black List inside.

London Eye

Again another very touristy thing to do. But it was amazing to see the city from above, after having lived here for five months.

Tube Art

"Mark Wallinger's Labyrinth, commissioned by Art on the Underground, is made up of 270 individual pieces – one for each station on the Tube network. […] Inspired by the instantly recognisable signs used on the Underground, Mark Wallinger chose an ancient symbol as the theme. The artworks represent the journeys taken by millions of passengers across London each day." [Metro]

Chinese New Year

February 10 2013 marks the Chinese New Year and a day of celebrations to herald the beginning of the Year of the Snake. In London was a big parade; on Trafalgar Square was lots of entertainment with music, speeches, acrobatics and much more.

Unfortunately it was very cold and rained nonstop the whole day, so we did not stay long. Elke and me then went to Royal Academy of Arts to see an exhibition with romantic paintings by Constable, Gainsborough and Turner. It was nice but not very impressive.

Unit 5 3/3

After finishing our essays we built groups for making publications. Alex, Joana, Mike and me had similar issues in our writings, so together we made a booklet with extracts from our essays. As we tried to pay attention to a sustainable production, we printed with a Riso on recycled paper. The three guys from work-form gave us feedback during the design phase.

After collecting packaging with eco labels for some weeks, I made this collage. A detail of it is also shown in the booklet.
Together with all the other publications we had a nice exhibition!

Driving on the Left

Left-hand traffic exists in 62 countries. Most of them are former British colonies like Australia, India or Jamaica. In London there is a street which prescribes right-hand driving, it is the only street in the United Kingdom. The so-called Savoy Court wants to prevent traffic jam in front of the Savoy Hotel with this special rule.

Cooking (/Eating) Group: Colombian and Polish

While spending a day with three other foreigners, I had the pleasure to have Colombian breakfast and Polish dinner. I love the possibilty to find food from all over the world easily in London.

Pandebono, Buñuelo, Pan de yuca, Empanadas (meat pastry), Calentado (rice and beans) and Embuelto (corn dough covered with a corn leave, not on the picture).

Shakespeare's Globe

I went to the exhibition and joined a tour at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. We were given a lot of information about the Elizabethan era and the theatre. For example, after two fires they built the third (current) Globe and are now building another theatre with a roof (to get even more visitors during the winter months). It was interesting to hear about the people that lived in Shakespeare's time – they were usually quite smelly … But there were big differences between poor and rich people.

Unit 6 9/11: Poetry II,2

For the second crit of the censorship project we decided on the matchbox idea. We crafted our own matchbox that opens to one side rather than at both ends, which gives a clearer impression of a book. We also changed the content of the box from rolls into small sheets of paper.

Film premiere

My exchange is coming to an end and before I leave I am trying to soak up as many experiences as I can. Today I went to a film premiere (overview here) for A Good Day to Die Hard and saw Bruce Willis. As we stood in the middle of screaming people it was exciting to observe all the rich and famous around us.
